Loomis Chaffee tuition and financial aid for 2026-27

Loomis Chaffee lists 2026-27 tuition of $77,340 boarding and $59,460 day. See the fees, how aid works and when to apply.

The Loomis Chaffee School lists its 2026-27 tuition as $77,340 for boarding students and $59,460 for day students. That is the starting figure, and a few fees sit on top of it. Financial aid is available through an application due January 31, 2027, with decisions on March 10, 2027. This guide explains how the numbers fit together for fall 2027 entry.

Tuition for 2026-27

| Student type | Tuition | | --- | --- | | Boarding | $77,340 | | Day | $59,460 |

Boarding students live in one of the school's 13 dormitories. Most dorm rooms are doubles or singles, and dorms have common kitchens and social rooms. Day students pay the lower tuition and do not receive daily transportation from the school.

Other fees to plan for

The school lists several fees beyond tuition for 2026-27.

  • Technology Fee: $1,005.
  • Health Center Fee: $665 for boarding students and $320 for day students.
  • International Student Fee: $1,140, for students who need a Form I-20.
  • Tuition refund insurance: optional.

The school says books, art supplies and other academic materials usually run $1,200 to $1,600 a year. Students bring a computer, and boarding students need proof of health insurance or enroll in the school plan. Build a simple yearly budget with tuition, these fees and those costs, plus a realistic allowance for travel and personal spending, so there are no surprises in September.

How financial aid works

The school says it is committed to enrolling the most outstanding applicants regardless of their ability to pay. For 2026-27, Loomis Chaffee awarded $14.2 million in financial aid to 33 percent of its students. Grants range from $1,000 up to the full cost of tuition, and the average grant covers 80 percent of tuition.

Two details deserve a careful read. First, the school notes that financial aid is extremely limited at this time. Second, in most cases it only admits students whom it can fund through its financial aid budget. Each year a small number of admitted students go on a financial aid waiting list, and a second group is denied admission because aid cannot be provided. If aid matters to your decision, say so in the aid application and read the school's aid FAQs before you apply.

How to apply for aid

New families apply through Clarity, a service the school partners with to process aid applications. Tax documents go to Clarity, not to Loomis. Each parent or guardian applies, regardless of custodial arrangements. The deadline is January 31, 2027.

Aid decisions arrive with admission decisions on March 10, 2027. Families who are admitted have until April 10, 2027 to enroll or decline, so you will have both pieces of information when you decide.

Aid is renewed each year

Families must reapply every year, and the award is adjusted for changes in circumstances. Current aid recipients reapply by December 1. Plan for that cycle from the beginning, since the second year starts only a few months into the first.

Dates for aid families

| Step | Date | | --- | --- | | Application deadline | January 15, 2027 | | Financial aid deadline | January 31, 2027 | | Decisions and aid awards | March 10, 2027 | | Reply deadline | April 10, 2027 |

What the school has not published

Loomis Chaffee does not publish details of its payment plan on the pages we reviewed, or how aid is split between boarding and day students. Ask the school directly if you need those specifics before the aid deadline.

Reading the numbers side by side

The gap between boarding and day tuition is $17,880 a year for 2026-27. Add the fees and the difference narrows slightly for the health center, since boarding students pay $665 and day students $320. Families on the fence should also weigh what the money buys. Boarding families get a residential community, with dorms that each hold between 30 and 50 students and in-dorm faculty families. Day families keep the home routine and take on the commute themselves, because the school provides no daily transportation.

Aid changes the picture for some families, but it is not a given. With an average grant of 80 percent of tuition, a family that receives aid can see a very different bill from the one above, yet the school is clear that aid is limited and that admission depends in most cases on whether the budget can fund the student. Plan for a range of outcomes, and decide in advance what you would do if you are admitted without aid.

A practical checklist

Start by gathering last year's tax documents and your most recent pay information, so the Clarity application takes an evening and not a week. Decide before you apply what annual amount your family could realistically pay, and compare it with the tuition above. Remember that you can apply for aid and admission in the same season, but the aid application is separate from the admissions application and has its own deadline.
